This is it. Congratulations to our 576 students on finishing an awesome year at New Brighton School. There is no way to capture all the learning, growing, challenges and opportunities of a school year in a brief summary – but we will say – WOW – that was a great year. Next week we’ll share the link to our year end video and you can enjoy reminiscing about some of the great events and see what was happening in all parts of our school.
On behalf of all the staff at New Brighton School I would like to thank you for choosing New Brighton School, thank you for your support and suggestions, thank you for trusting us with your children and wish you an amazing last few days of the school year and an amazing summer of good weather, adventure and quality family time. Weekly Update Apr 23-27 We’d like to start by thanking School Council and our volunteers for organizing and running a great movie night last week. It was a sellout again and the popcorn machine was running full out to keep up with the demand. Many hands make for light work and good fun. The week we have several celebrations. Our Grade 2-4 Choir has been investing two lunch hours a week for months to hone their skills. On Wednesday they will be sharing with us – an AM show for the school and a PM show for parents and guests. Our choir will also be the main event at our Volunteer Tea on Friday morning. For all our volunteers we hope you will be able to join us. If you can’t make it, please accept our thanks for the gift of your time. There are many things that happen in school that would not be possible without volunteers. Dayna and I are looking forward to passing over our responsibilities on Friday to Maya A – Principal and Adalyn G – Assistant Principal our two Grade 2 students who raised the most money in our Read A Thon. We met with them last week to do some planning – and there is very little time to rest in the day they have put together. We shared some information around our hours/calendar and organization at School Council last week and some other celebrations. The School Report is attached below. This Week Monday Apr 23 Grade 3 Sewing Club Tuesday Apr24 TASC Swimming Popcorn Snack (pre-order was required) Grade 4 Girls Group, Choir Wednesday Apr 25 Choir Performance for K-4 Students PM Choir Performance for parents/guests (tickets required) 2PM Thursday Apr 26 Special Lunch – Pizza (pre-order was required) Grade 4 Tour DMCS Friday Apr 27 Student Assistant Principal and Principal for the Day Volunteer Tea (door open at 8:10 – gym) For the first time since mid December it looks like we’ll have a full week of enjoying great Calgary winter weather outside in the morning, at lunch and at recess. With all the snow, sun and warm weather we know students will have a great time. We had a great School Council and Fundraising Society meeting last week. Below is the report we shared with parents, along with some of the plans NBEPA have in the works for the rest of the year. We hope you will share with us our thanks for these two groups of dedicated parents working on behalf of you and all our students. You’ll see in the report that we are preparing to welcome lots of new students and families to New Brighton School in September 2018. It is Pink Shirt Day on February 28. We’ll be wearing pink on Wednesday (or our school t-shirts) to acknowledge the day. We’ll also be using the day as an opportunity to celebrate the way our close to 600 students interact positively with each other almost all the time. This Week Monday Feb 26 Tuesday Feb 27 Gr 2-4 Choir, Gr 4 Comic Club, Gr 4 Girls Group Wednesday Feb 28 Gr 1 Dance Club Thursday Mar 1 Gr 2-4 Choir, Gr 4 Comic Club Friday Mar 2 AM Kindergarten Attends 11:45AM dismissal January 22-26 Our first official work towards the 2018-2019 school year begins on Monday with the beginning of Kindergarten registration. Registering for kindergarten is a pretty exciting event for parents and students and we are looking forward to welcoming many new students to our school. Registration information is available on our website or by calling the school office. Our Winter Activity Day is scheduled for this Thursday afternoon. The forecast looks great – although some fresh snow would add to the event. All students need to do is be dressed for the weather. School T-Shirts – there are still a few school shirts available for purchase ($10) in the office in Youth Small, Medium and Large sizes. Below is our School Report to School Council. We are happy to share the results of some grant writing our teachers did – how successful they were and some of the materials that we are purchasing for the school. The great part is that all grants enhanced the materials and resources from K to Grade 4. This Week Monday Jan 22 2018-2019 K Registration Begins Tuesday Jan 23 Gr 2-4 Choir, Gr 4 Girls Group, Gr 4 Comic Club Wednesday Jan 24 Gr 1 Dance Club Thursday Jan 25 Fun Lunch (Taco Time) – pre-order was required Gr 2-4 Choir, Gr 4 Comic Club Winter Activity Day (PM) Friday Jan 26 PD DAY – NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS We hope your children enjoyed a great first week back at school. Before the Christmas Break and during the PD Day on January 7 our teachers worked to make sure we were ready to hook our students back into learning with some great questions and great activities. Hopefully through conversations with your child, classroom Blogs or the Term Plan you received at Conferences you have an idea of what your children will be up to.
Below are the questions that will be explored by our different grade groups over the next few months. Kindergarten As an engaged citizen, how do I contribute to the care of the environment? Grade 1 How does our community meet the needs of seniors?
Grade 2 How does water shape a community’s identity? Grade 3 Curating a Culture: How does where you live influence your way of life? Grade 4 What’s in a name?
Our school has recently become a S4 school. S4 (Start Smart, Stay Safe) is a collaborative partnership between Calgary Police Service, Mount Royal Univeristy, the CBE and Calgary Catholic Schools. S4 is a proactive, strengths-based model of teaching/learning where police, families, and schools partner together to actively build positive relationships, create safe communities and prepare children for the challenges of our complex, changing world. Currently our partnership is focused on classroom introductions and some health curriculum related topics in Grades 2 and 4. Further opportunities will be explored by grades or as a school around areas of common concern for students, parents and school staff such as online safety and community safety. More information about S4 can be found at: http://startsmartstaysafe.ca/ Hopefully the snow stays around for a while longer. We have tentatively scheduled the afternoon of January 25 as our Winter Activity Day. It was a huge success last year with perfect weather and snow conditions and we are hoping for a repeat this year. Every teacher will be organizing an outside activity and students will move freely from activity to activity – enjoying the great times that are possible during the winter in Calgary. More details will come home but, in general, students just need to dress for the weather. This week: Tuesday Jan 16 Gr 4 Girls Group Gr 4 Comic Making Club Wednesday Jan 17 Gr 1 Dance Club Thursday Jan 17 Gr 4 Comic Making Club Happy New Year and welcome back. We hope everyone enjoyed their Winter Break. The weather provided something for everyone and we are excited to begin school with some more normal temperatures. Important Grade 4 Message – Don’t forget you start 2018 with a Field Trip on January 9th or 10th. On behalf of the school I would like to thank the many families that demonstrated some “Staff Appreciation” with the wide variety of tasty treats during the last week of school. We always feel appreciated at New Brighton School and this was a great way to end 2017. We would like to thank School Council for organizing the treats and We would also like to thank our community for supporting the Book Fair during conferences. We’ll share the final totals with you soon and we know your support led to some great reading over the holidays and will lead to some great new books in the Learning Commons. We even had a special visitor help keep the Book Fair lively and energetic. We would also like to thank everyone for helping us donate close to 300 stuffed socks, gift cards and bus tickets to the Mustard Seed. After a little problem with a tailgate we were able to make sure everything arrived safely and in time to be delivered to clients on December 25th. Ending 2017 with report cards and conferences was also a great way to celebrate our main purpose – student learning. Between the report cards, comments and conferences in December we hope you were able to get a good picture of what your child had learned and what the next best steps are for them in their learning over the coming months.
We are looking forward to a great start to 2018 and look forward to seeing everyone on the first day back for students – Tuesday, January 9th. This week is a combination of celebrating what has been accomplished so far and making plans for the next few months of school. We hope you were able to celebrate the many accomplishments of your child while reviewing their report card that came home. The next part of reporting is to attend a Student Involved Conference with your child this week. Booking is done online at https://webapps.cbe.ab.ca/my account. Conferences allow you to see some of the work your child completed and discuss plans for the next few months of school. There will also be an opportunity for your child to share some activities in action with you. We are also happy to host a Scholastic Book Fair during conferences. Book Fair purchases support new books for our Learning Commons. Hours are below and follow conference times – but closes at 11:00AM on Friday. Students get a sneak peek on Wednesday. Our school will be coming together for a bit each day this week to sing some Christmas Carols. It’s a pretty informal affair and fairly short (30 minutes or less). Parents are welcome to attend and sing along with us. On behalf of all the staff at New Brighton School I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday and a Happy New Year. Warm Feet for the Street We are all looking forward to our school community coming together this Thursday for our Warm Feet for the Street Family Evening. Families have been very generous in their donations of small items that can be stuffed into socks. Our Grade 2 students have been excellent in making announcements in our school and organizing the supplies for all of us. We currently have over 120 families who have said they are attending. Please RSVP by Tuesday so we have enough treats and hot chocolate for everyone. Donations of supplies to be put in socks can also keep arriving until Tuesday or Wednesday. School T-Shirts have Arrived Our school t-shirts have arrived and will be distributed on Monday or Tuesday. They look great. Report Cards Report Cards will be coming home on December 15th. Dayna and myself have the pleasure of reading each one before it comes home and that’s been the work this weekend and next. Students learn and do so much in 4 months of school. I know you will be pleased with how well teachers know each child. Reporting on student achievement is a three part process. The report card and comments is one. The conference with your childs teacher is the second and having your child attend the conference with you for the “Student-Involved” component is the third. These three parts provide a more complete picture of what your child has learned, what they are working on and what supports are in place to help them achieve their full potential. This Week Tuesday December 5 Gr 4 Girls Group Thursday December 7 2:15 Choir Performance (gym) 6:00-7:30 Warm Feet for the Street Family Evening Friday, December 8 PD DAY NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS Welcome to the last week of November. Warm Feet for the Street Please return your RSVP if you will be joining us for our Warm Feet for the Street Family Evening on December 7. We want to make sure we have enough hot chocolate and treats for everyone. We also want to make sure we have organized for the numbers. Last year we learned we need more lines for filling the socks. We understand if you can’t join us and are happy that every family can still participate by sending items to use to stuff socks. The list is on the invitation – we’ve had good success collecting so far and want you to know that every item donated will be put to good use. Choir New Brighton School is very proud of our choir. They kicked of the holiday season with a terrific show at the Spruce Meadows Christmas Market on Friday. They looked and sounded great to the dozens and dozens of parents, guests and market goers. They raised the level of cheer throughout the whole building.
