Welcome to the last two months of the school year. Everyone enjoys the lighter evenings being outside and sleep might come a bit harder to our youngest learners. That’s how I remember it with my daughters anyways. It has been great watching the students enjoying the outside time at lunch with soccer games starting up and students perfecting their four-square and skipping skills or just enjoying the bits on sunshine in a sunny spot with a friend. I have also had the opportunity to watch how students and staff have welcomed several new students to New Brighton School over the last week. Having a great welcome to a new school, classroom and classmates goes a long way in making a new student be successful. Stress in school should be low and we are pleased with what we think is a welcoming, supportive environment where expectations can still be high. New Brighton School will be participating in Hats on for Mental Health on May 3. Hats often represent our “outside of school lives” and what we enjoy away from school. We look forward to seeing the variety of hats our staff and students wear on Wednesday as we celebrate diversity and good mental health. Teachers for the Day
Below are some more pictures from our Teachers for Friday collection. Our guest teachers did a great job – and our regular teachers commented, in a good way, how they could hear their words coming from the new teachers. Congratulations again for our great Read-a-Thon results. We Appreciate our Volunteers – Save the Date – Friday May 26 9-10AM So many things at school would not be possible without the support and help of our volunteers. This is so true in a new school. From building furniture, pumping up balls and labeling and labeling and labeling our reliance on volunteers began on the first day of school. In fact, our reliance on volunteers began even before the school was built with parents working on our behalf to begin a School Council and Fundraising Society. We have people volunteering in the school every day helping students practice their reading, create that perfect art project, solve the hard math problem and make sure field trips are well supervised. We’ve had concession stands and lots of School Council and Fundraising Society meetings attended by many parents. If you have volunteered in any way we would like to invite you to our Volunteer Tea. Invitations will be coming home soon but for now we would like you Save the Date: Volunteer Appreciation Tea Friday, May 26 from 9:00-10:00AM in the Gathering Area We hope you can attend. Movie Night Update School Council is happy to report the Family Movie Night made $979. We would like to thank our community sponsors who helped make the event a really big success. Community Sponsorship helps make our events even more successful: Dawn Herron Maser (Royal LePage) who sponsored the water, juice and chips at the concession; Staples who provided us with our movie night posters and New Brighton Resident’s Association who loaned us their popcorn popper. Our Read-A-Thon winners started their work last week and will continue this week. Everyone was a winner with these students taking the reins of the school. We are pretty sure their prize did not include having to take work home to assess over the weekend. April 17-21 Happy Easter everyone. We hope you are enjoying the long weekend. Teachers will be hard at work Monday while our students enjoy another day of rest or adventure. New Principal And Assistant Principal (for a morning) Ms. McComish and I are happy to welcome Cassidy and Sophie to the New Brighton Administration team on Thursday. They will temporarily take over the operation of New Brighton School. These are two of the best jobs in the CBE and so we are only willing to part with them for a short time and look forward to working with our new partners. School Council and Fundraising Society We had a great meeting last week. We recapped the very successful Family Movie Night and Read-A-Thon. We also sought some feedback around the spacing of the first report card of the year and conferences. After some discussion we agreed to look at the calendar next year so that the first report card is followed closely by conferences. We also agreed to give Family Photo Night a try next year. Book a time with our school photographer and get those family portraits done and returned in time for Christmas. There is a small benefit to the school but largely it is a bonus for our families from having a school in the community Stay tuned for details. The Administration Report to School Council is below. As a school we really appreciate the time and effort of all our volunteers. Our School Council and Fundraising Society members are no exception. We appreciate the advice and support each group has given to the school. Any day can be Jersey Day during the NHL playoffs if your team is playing – and at New Brighton School – as long as the Flames are still going – we’ll be wearing our jerseys on Game Day. Hopefully we’ll get to wear them more than once this weekJ Go Flames Go.

We hope you and your children enjoyed Spring Break. We also hope your children are well rested and ready for all the learning coming up in the final three months of the school year. Conferences were very well attended before the break. We hope the conversation with the teacher, an opportunity to view some of your child’s work and the new curriculum letter provided some insight into what your children will be learning over the next 3 months. We wrap up the Read-a-Thon this week. Pledge sheets and donations will be accepted all week. Pledges must be returned by 3:15PM on Wednesday, April 5th to be considered for the amazing rewards. We plan to be able to announce winners and some school wide totals sometime on Friday. Everyone will be a winner as our school gets closer to being able to build a new playground.
