February 27-Mar 3
Two messages were sent to all CBE families last week – and just in case you missed them – you can catch up at the links below. Math Strategy http://www.cbe.ab.ca/news-centre/Pages/cbe-k-12-math-strategy.aspx Information about Mumps http://www.cbe.ab.ca/news-centre/Pages/information-about-mumps-from-alberta-health-services.aspx There have been a variety of field trips this year and more still to come. We’d like to thank parents who have been available to volunteer on these trips. Off-site, and many at school activities, would not be possible without the help of our volunteers. Thank you. We hope families have enjoyed a great Family Day long weekend. And we hope that drivers and pedestrians remember all their good habits around the school after a 5-day break from the routine. We learned a little traffic fact last week. Did you know that it is illegal to do a U-turn at the intersection of New Brighton Drive and New Brighton Circle? Our information is that, unless posted differently, U-turns are not permitted at any intersection. We know last week this rule was being enforced by CPS at dismissal time and that the plan was to return for entry and dismissal times this week. Accountability Pillar Survey February is the time for surveys in the CBE and with Alberta Education. Last week all Grade 4 students gave feedback to Alberta Education through the Accountability Survey. All parents of Grade 4 students should have received an Accountability Survey in the mail. We encourage you to complete the survey. We value your feedback. New Brighton Parent Survey All parents are encouraged to complete the New Brighton Parent Survey. It is available until February 23 at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/New_Brighton_Parent_Survey We appreciate your feedback and hope you will take the time to share your thoughts with us. We would also like to thank the 70 families who have responded so far. CBE Math Strategy Parents can sign up to be informed about an upcoming survey around the development of a CBE Math Strategy. Go to for more information: http://www.cbe.ab.ca/get-involved/public-engagement/Pages/K-12-Math-Strategy-Engagement.aspx Fun Lunch and Special Snack Reminders We value the feedback we receive at School Council and know keeping track of events can be challenging sometime. Beginning last week you will receive an email reminder from the school the day before the last day to order for Special Snack and Lunch dates. We noticed this reminder seemed very popular for popcorn last week. Pink Shirt Day Pink Shirt Day has become more and more popular since its inception in 2007. The date did sneak up on us this year and wearing pink is not the most important way to show support. We see the evidence of our students’ respect and appreciation for diversity every day at New Brighton School. Students and staff are invited to show their support by wearing link on Wednesday but the most important actions are everyday in our interactions with each other. Feb 22 Pink Shirt Day Feb 23 Gr 2 In Class Field Trip Fun Lunch – OPA – Pre-order was required Feb 24 Public Library Book Truck – Gr 4 and 5 An important reminder that there is no school for Kindergarten on Wednesday and Grades 1-4 students dismiss at 11:45 on Wednesday. Report to School Council Late last week we emailed you a link to the New Brighton School Parent Survey. We hope you will spend a few minutes completing the survey to help us celebrate the great things going on at New Brighton School and help us continue to improve.
Parent Survey Link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/New_Brighton_Parent_Survey Accountability Pillar Survey Each year Alberta Education surveys parents and students in Grades 4, 7, 10. Student surveys are administered at school. Parent surveys are mailed directly to parents from Alberta Education. Parents of Grade 4 students should have received their surveys in the mail. We encourage you to complete and return the survey. Winter Walking Conditions With the recent warm weather we expect the fields, hills and compound to start each day slippery. Please be careful walking to school and we’ll be reminding students to “walk like a penguin” while enjoying the great outside weather we are expecting. This is a short but busy week for students in Calgary and the CBE. We hope you and your students enjoy the Family Day long weekend and are able to enjoy some of the great activities going on around the city. This Week: Feb 13 Grade 3 to National Music Center K – Yellow Fish Road Presentation Grade 2 Art Club Feb 14 Popcorn Snack Day – K-4 (pre-order was required) Feb 15 No School for Kindergarten Early Dismissal (11:45AM) Grades 1-4 Feb 16-17 Teacher and Staff Association Convention – No School for students Feb 20 Family Day Holiday – No School Drop-off and Pick Up We are on a roll. Patience and choosing safety over convenience have created a pretty pleasant entry and dismissal time around the school. We’d like to thank drivers and walkers for being respectful of each other and thank you in advance for keeping it up for the rest of the school year. It was a busy week at New Brighton. We’d like to thank parents for joining us at our School Opening Rehearsal and our invited guests who joined us for the Official Opening. Our students were amazing. Invited guests let us know what a welcoming environment our school has and several made particular comments about the displays of student work and how engaged students were during their “Special Guest” tours of the school. Our Grade 3 Celebration of Learning had a great turn out and students were so excited to share their drumming skills, dance skills and personal affirmations. They are awesome. Our Grade 2 students had the opportunity to interview a reporter with 660 News/Breakfast Television. And then he interviewed a couple of them. New Brighton School made the news and a segment on Breakfast Television. Watch Dave Wills talk about his time with this link. http://www.btcalgary.ca/videos/ What are we Reading Our staff is preparing for a discussion around “The Rules of Math” and which rules might we be teaching that actually hinder learning in later grades? You might enjoy the read and you might enjoy recognizing your own school experience in some of the examples. Have a Great Week
