March 20-24 Winter has finally turned to Spring which is cause to celebrate and fitting for the work at New Brighton School last week and this week. As we turn to thinking about Spring Break we would like to share some recent and upcoming celebrations with you. On behalf of all the parents, students and guests who attended Movie Night we would like to thank your School Council for organizing this great event. The gym was full and the kids had a blast. Thank you to the parents who organized and ran a great movie night and concession. An event like this is only possible with great parents who organize and volunteer. We would like to celebrate the work of our Grade 1 students. Their Celebration of Learning was full of energy and their work as Urban Planners was amazing. Who knew that “Footloose” was such an intergenerational tune? I was fortunate to get to attend the New Brighton Resident Engagement Symposium and listen to a group of our Grade 1 students share their proposals about “What is the next best thing for New Brighton,” with a group of residents and community decision makers. Thanks to our Grade 1 team for supporting their students on Saturday. I wouldn’t be surprised if what our Grade 1 students thought was best next is what the community chooses too. We’d like to celebrate the enthusiasm of our students towards the Read-A-Thon. There is lots of talk going on about the playground and students are appreciating the opportunity to be a part of the process. Keep collecting pledges and keep reading over Spring Break. In advance we would like to thank parents and students for clearing out the Lost and Found by Friday. Although the donation of clothes is always appreciated by a local organization our first hope is to get the wide variety of items to the original owner. The most important celebration this week will be your attendance at Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday this week. If you haven’t booked a conference there is still time. Teachers will share student growth since the last report card and share their plans for your child over the next three months of school. Conferences are booked using the MY CBE ACCOUNT link on the school home page. We hope to see everyone there.

Add in the activities that don’t make the school-wide calendar and we feel we’ll be sending students home on March 22 ready for a rest. Read-a-thon We are excited to partner with the Fundraising Society in a read-a-thon. The benefits of this type of activity are that – 100% of proceeds go directly to supporting a playground – no expenses and no profits by a third party. Another benefit is that each dollar will likely be doubled through the application for matching grants from various foundations and organizations. A third benefit is that every child can participate and no amount raised is too small. Finally – even the prizes or rewards will be enjoyed by all students. Thank you for supporting this fundraiser. We kicked off the Read-a-Thon with an assembly on Friday and also celebrated the 5, 10 and 15 year CBE careers of some of our teachers. School Council Report Grade 1 Celebration
We are looking forward to our Grade 1 Celebration of Learning this week. We are also excited that several Grade 1 students will be presenting to the New Brighton Residents Association on Saturday, March 18 as part of a community engagement session. We know they’ll do great. Movie Night Doors Open at 6:00PM. There will be a Loonie Concession. It will be a great night and is a sell-out. Do not forget your tickets. Fire regulations have a gym capacity and we will be collecting tickets at the door. We’ll be sitting picnic style so bring a blanket and a pillow. Chairs will be available for people with mobility issues but will need to be at the edges or back for everyone’s viewing pleasure. Conferences Student-Involved Conference booking has begun. Please use My CBE Account on the school website to book a conference. It is a sell-out. No more tickets are available. Congratulations Dr. Martha Cohen School (DMCS) DMCS will officially open for students on Monday, March 13. And so this is the last week we will enjoy having hosted DMCS Grade 5 students. I know the Grade 5 students and staff are as excited now as we were six months ago to be moving into their new school. We have appreciated the contributions of our guests over the last six months to New Brighton School. The Grade 5 students have been great ambassadors of DMCS. We expect the time of DMCS at our school will pay benefits in the future as our own students from K-4 have had a chance to interact with the students and staff from DMCS. Nothing beats moving to a new school more than a friendly and familiar face when you get there. We wish DMCS all the best at their great new school. School Council Invite We look forward to seeing you on March 8. All parents are welcome. Coming up this Week
