November 28 – December 2
We are entering the last three weeks of school before the winter break and there is a lot to look forward to for our students. Watch for the December calendar updates later this week. On behalf our teachers I would like to thank everyone who was able to attend a Student Involved Conference last week. There is lots of research about student success being directly linked to parent involvement and interest in their child’s education and attending a conference with your child is one way to demonstrate that involvement. I had several parents approach me saying the conference format was a little different than they remember or are used to. They appreciated the opportunity to engage with their child in some learning activities. One parent mentioned it allowed them to understand more fully the information the teacher shared during the sit down portion of the conference. We appreciate your feedback and if you have any that you would like to share please do: [email protected]. Below are a few images of some of the things that were happening at New Brighton during our conferences. Ms. Houston passes on her appreciation to the many students who stopped by to say goodbye. I can also say that Ms. Lysak is excited to be returning this week and being a part of the exciting things coming up this month and into the New Year. Important Dates this Week Friday December 2 – PD DAY – No School for Students Have a great week.

November 21-25
It looks like another great week of fall weather. Colder in the morning and sunny for the walk home. It is pretty awesome that riding a bike to school near the end of November is still possible. Student-Involved Conferences We look forward to meeting with parents and students this week during conferences and hope you have had an opportunity to book your conference. You can continue to book a conference on line until Wednesday evening. The November conferences will be Student Involved. You will still book a 15 minute sit-down appointment with your child’s teacher. You are also invited to arrive 15-20 minutes early (or stay later – until 7:30PM or 12:00PM) to view some of your child’s learning artefacts and participate in some learning activities too. We feel your conference will be informative and successful by having the opportunity to see your child in action and have them share the great work and learning they have been a part of as part of the conference format. When booking conference times, especially for multiple children, please consider the viewing/participating component of your time at the school. New Brighton School will also be hosting an Usborne Book Fair during Conferences. Visit the Learning Commons to browse and order. Proceeds will support our Learning Commons print collection. Warm Feet for the Street Family Evening Please RSVP with the invitation provided for our Warm Feet for the Street Family Evening on December 7th. We want to make sure we have enough socks, supplies and treats for everyone. Check out the video prepared by a Grade 2 class outlining the organization we are supporting and some of the learning that is going on in our classes around this event. http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b193/ This Week November 24 – No School for Kindergarten – Conferences all Day November 24 – Early Dismissal (11:45AM) for Gr 1-4 November 25 – No School K-4 - Conferences Remembrance Day Last week we observed Remembrance Day. Thank you to the many parents and guests who joined us for our Remembrance Day Assembly. Bringing personal meaning to Remembrance Day for our youngest learners is a task requiring the support of family and school working together. We are fortunate to live in relatively peaceful times and in a place where the losses from conflict do not touch the lives of the vast majority of our students. However, we cannot underestimate the ability of our students to care and think about others that they have not met and do not know. It was heartwarming to see our school community come together to fill dozens of boxes with food to support the Veterans Food Bank. There is not a student in the school who does not think they have made a difference in the life of a veteran who needs the support of the food bank and the community they protected. I also had the pleasure of mailing envelopes of letters, poems and art work from our students to fifteen Canadian Forces bases spread across the country and the world – on land and at sea. From Kindergarten to Grade 4 there was little doubt that students understand the importance of Remembrance Day and the sacrifices others make from the content of the letters and the care given to each letter, postcard or picture. Finally – for a school filled with the energy and enthusiasm of 500 4 to 10 year olds there was such a feeling of calm and respect during our assembly that I know our students have had the best explanations about remembering and Remembrance Day from our teachers and from you. Some images from our Remembrance Day Assembly are below. Warm Feet for the Street We try to think of school year as a marathon where pace can change but the goal remains to have “some gas in the tank” at the end. Did you know there are only 5 weeks remaining until the Winter Break and the last school day of 2016? It begins to feel like a sprint with projects, events, clubs, special lunches, special snacks and some celebrating together of the approaching holiday as a school. And the real work of school – learning – needs to continue until the last bell on the last day. We look forward to celebrating the growth of your children at Conferences on November 24 and 25 and hope you have booked a Conference. We also hope you and your family will be able to join the school community on December 7 for our Warm Feet for the Street event. School Council and New Brighton School feel this will be an excellent way for our entire school community to come together. School Council Update We have appreciated the support of your School Council . Each month we provide a brief update about the happenings at the school. Beginning last month we provided the report along with a printed report and are happy to include that report below. As with any communication from the school please email if you have questions or feedback. Coming up this Week Tuesday - Picture Retake Day and Class Photo Day K-4 Thursday – Special Lunch – Subway – Grades 1-5 – pre-order required Nov 7-11
Remembrance Day New Brighton School will be holding our Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 10th beginning at 10:00AM. Parents and guests are welcome to attend. Silver donations for the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund will be accepted in classrooms and the office this week and each student will be provided a poppy in advance of our ceremony on Thursday morning. Veterans Food Bank Drive Our students should be very proud of their support for the Veterans Food Bank Drive. Our donation boxes are over-flowing and we expect some more boxes to arrive this week. It has been demonstrated again to us how the small actions of individuals working towards a common goal can make a significant difference to whatever that goal is. We also look forward to our celebration challenge of doubling the school goal. Have a look at the video produced by our Grade 3 team on our school home page. Learning Outside There is something pretty awesome about being able to duck out of a meeting, head up the pathway, and see a grade group of students learning outside. We are fortunate for a school in the community and fortunate to be in a community with some great learning resources in our own backyard. I know other grades have visited the pond this year and know we look forward to visiting and learning there more over the rest of the school year. I also know I’ll be “ducking out” again to see more of the great work and learning like in the images below. School Council and Fundraising Society Meeting You are invited to join us on Wednesday for the New Brighton School Council Meeting (6-7PM) and New Brighton Parent Association (7-8PM) @ New Brighton School. We’ll be sharing a draft of our School Development Plan. What are we Reading? The question this week is – What will we be reading? Our school opened with a well-resourced collection of print resources. We also opened with several thousand dollars of sets of books to assist in direct, guided reading instruction. After seeking student and teacher input we have recently ordered several hundred new books and sets of books to support our students. Basically the new additions to our collection consist of several categories:
Reminders:
Well New Brighton School -
We've sure got the Lost part of Lost and Found covered. Does anything in the images below look familiar? Most students seem to feel all these items belong to someone else - even after a trip by the tables the number items Found does not seem to change much. Today from 11:30-11:45 and Monday from 8:00-8:30 and 3:00-3:15 parents are invited in to view and recover our collection of Lost Items in the Gathering Area We'll continue to keep everything we've found until after Conferences on November 25 when everything will be donated. Have a great weekend. |
