Remembrance Day Last week we observed Remembrance Day. Thank you to the many parents and guests who joined us for our Remembrance Day Assembly. Bringing personal meaning to Remembrance Day for our youngest learners is a task requiring the support of family and school working together. We are fortunate to live in relatively peaceful times and in a place where the losses from conflict do not touch the lives of the vast majority of our students. However, we cannot underestimate the ability of our students to care and think about others that they have not met and do not know. It was heartwarming to see our school community come together to fill dozens of boxes with food to support the Veterans Food Bank. There is not a student in the school who does not think they have made a difference in the life of a veteran who needs the support of the food bank and the community they protected. I also had the pleasure of mailing envelopes of letters, poems and art work from our students to fifteen Canadian Forces bases spread across the country and the world – on land and at sea. From Kindergarten to Grade 4 there was little doubt that students understand the importance of Remembrance Day and the sacrifices others make from the content of the letters and the care given to each letter, postcard or picture. Finally – for a school filled with the energy and enthusiasm of 500 4 to 10 year olds there was such a feeling of calm and respect during our assembly that I know our students have had the best explanations about remembering and Remembrance Day from our teachers and from you. Some images from our Remembrance Day Assembly are below. Warm Feet for the Street We try to think of school year as a marathon where pace can change but the goal remains to have “some gas in the tank” at the end. Did you know there are only 5 weeks remaining until the Winter Break and the last school day of 2016? It begins to feel like a sprint with projects, events, clubs, special lunches, special snacks and some celebrating together of the approaching holiday as a school. And the real work of school – learning – needs to continue until the last bell on the last day. We look forward to celebrating the growth of your children at Conferences on November 24 and 25 and hope you have booked a Conference. We also hope you and your family will be able to join the school community on December 7 for our Warm Feet for the Street event. School Council and New Brighton School feel this will be an excellent way for our entire school community to come together. School Council Update We have appreciated the support of your School Council . Each month we provide a brief update about the happenings at the school. Beginning last month we provided the report along with a printed report and are happy to include that report below. As with any communication from the school please email if you have questions or feedback.
