Dear Parents, Our third week of school has come to a close. We are happy to have not only opened on time but to have opened an amazing school in your neighborhood. Through our Open House and Meet the Teacher events we have had the opportunity to meet so many of our parents and many members of your extended families. Response to the Classroom Blogs has been overwhelmingly positive and seems like a great way to stay in touch with the happenings of the classroom. As Principal, I am pleased to be in charge of celebrations and will be using this blog to share some of our celebrations with you. Although my own blog will not be as interesting or as exciting as the classroom one you read each day – I hope you find time within the week to read the Weekly Principal Blog. I promise that any time sensitive information will either be shared via email or through your child’s classroom blog. I also promise that each week will not be as long as this one – but it has been three weeks… I would like to celebrate the early work of our teachers and support staff. In a very short period of time our staff have gotten to know you children very well. Last week I had the opportunity to sit with each teacher and talk briefly about each student in their class. Teachers have gathered early assessment information on literacy and numeracy development as well as student strengths, needs and preferences in the skills and attitudes needed as part of a classroom and school community. Our support staff have formed relationships with our most complex students and done a great job in getting our lunch period organized in a fun and social way for students. I hope you will join me in celebrating the start to the school year and setting some direction for your child’s learning by booking a Parent-Teacher Conference on October 6 or 7 (details coming home soon). We look forward to working with you over the coming year. I would like to celebrate our first big school event – The Terry Fox Run – on September 29th. It will be our school’s first collective activity where we make a difference in the world. We can and we will make a difference in the fight against cancer. I would like to celebrate the parents who came together last week to form The New Brighton School Council. School Council represents the parent and community perspective to the school, the CBE and the Provincial Government. The executive elected last week will need your help and, going forward, all parents are invited to attend School Council meetings. Congratulations to your first School Council Executive: Chair: Merisa Butler Co-Chair: Neeta Nagewadia Co-Secretary: Karen Clark Co-Secretary: Ghaim Bama Treasurer: Leslie Kell Directors at Large: Sarah Stewart, Bonile Moyo, Paige Hunter, Cathy Eastman, Dawn Herron Maser and Suzanne Lynch Finally – I would like to celebrate our students. You would never know that the school, the routines and the teachers are all different. Students have taken up the work of creating their new school as a place of engagement, rigor and enjoyment. The evidence is clear from the smiles on the compound each morning, visiting any classroom, hanging out with the students at lunch and seeing the same smiles at the end of each day. We still have lots to do together – but are off to a great start. Jeff What are we reading right now? From time to time we'll share an article, video or text that our staff are reading. We have had many comments about our staff commitment to the physical environment. We know that the physical environment is not just to be pleasing and comfortable but actually impacts and supports learning. Here are a couple of short pieces that helped us with our inspiration.
